Music Monday

Song of the Day – Soul Flower remix

Soul Flower remix, is one of them tracks that help make Monday a little more enjoyable. Brought to you by one of  LA’s own Hip Hop groups from the early 90’s, The Pharcyde. Laying down tracks since 1991, the Pharcyde is a quad of emcees made up of, Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, Imani and Fatlip. The original, Soul Flower track, was released by the Jazz group, The Brand New Heavies, on their album entitled, Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol.1. This was the first studio track that The Pharcyde recorded as a featured artist.

The Soul Flower remix, was featured on The Pharcyde’s debut album named, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, released in 1992. The album was a success in the Hip Hop community and it created much hype for their follow up album, Labcabincalifornia, which featured tracks produced by the late,  J. Dilla. All the tracks off of, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, were produced by J-Swift andincluded hit tracks like, Ya Mama and Passin’ Me By. The album is filled with some of The Pharcyde’s best work and is often noted as an influential album in Hip Hop.

Unfortunately, The Pharcyde had issues within the  group during and after the recording of their second album. The drug addictions of both, J-Swift and Fatlip slowed down productions of any other Pharcyde albums and both of them were out of the group by 1996. Had The Pharcyde been a trouble free group and released a few more hit albums they would be as big as they should have been.

If you are new to The Pharcyde be sure to also check out the singles; Passin Me By (Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde),  Runnin (Labcabincalifornia) and the Dilla produced track, Y? (Labcabincalifornia). Also worth checking out is The Pharcyde’s music video for their track, Drop. The video was done by the artistic director, Spike Jonze and was choreographed so the video would be played in reverse.

Favorite Line: “But to be exact, I’ve got more flavors than a bucket full of fruit, In 92 we take cabs 93 we take loot”
